PODCAST: Democracy on the ballot in biggest elections year ever
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
South Africans are not the only ones heading to the polls in 2024 – it is
the biggest voting year ever on earth.

Billions of people will cast their vote on all of the continents this year. While we are firmly in the grip of election fever ahead of 29 May, ours is not the only election being closely followed. In this last episode of our limited elections podcast series, the Jacaranda FM news team looks at how our elections fit into the global democracy ….
This is the year in which more than half of the world’s population lives in countries with elections – from Russia in die east to America in the west, with a host of countries in Africa and including powerhouse Britain on the European continent.
The world’s largest democracy, India, is currently in the last stretch of its six-week-long voting process.
And then – of course – South Africans will vote at the end of May.
It is a significant year because the issue of democracy is also on the global ballot, specifically whether it can withstand pressure and deliver free and fair results.
The voting process will also be another test for South Africa, and the results will signify to the rest of the world the direction of the new administration.

Elections 2024 – The Power of your X was an original limited Jacpod series.
It was researched, written, produced and presented by the Jacaranda FM News team.
