Derek Hanekom becomes latest ANC MP to resign
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
Former tourism minister Derek Hanekom has become the latest African National Congress (ANC) member to resign as a Member of Parliament.
Hanekom is the 8th ANC MP to resign after failing to make it into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet.
He joins the likes of former ministers Jeff Radebe, Siyabonga Cwele, Susan Shabangu, Malusi Gigaba, Nomaindia Mfeketo, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, as well as former speaker Baleka Mbete, in tendering his resignation.
Hanekom, who has been a vocal supporter of President Ramaphosa, failed to make it onto his cabinet when it was announced two weeks ago.
He served as minister of tourism, science and technology and land reform.
Earlier on Tuesday, former minister for women in the presidency, Bathabile Dlamini also announced her resignation as an MP.
In her resignation letter, Dlamini said the governing party is not ready to be led by a woman.
