Dirco ‘aware’ of South Africans stuck in Mozambique

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) says it is aware of South Africans who are stuck in a hotel in the port city of Palma in northern Mozambique.

Soldiers from the Mozambican army patrol the streets after security in the area was increased, following a two-day attack from suspected islamists in October last year, on March 7, 2018 in Mocimboa da Praia, Mozambique.

Many South Africans have been trapped in a hotel as the Islamic-linked fighting entered a second day.

It is reported that the Islamic rebels invaded the town on Wednesday afternoon.

Dirco spokesperson, Lunga Ngqengelele says the department is working around the clock to assist South Africans.

“I can confirm that the Department, through its mission in Mozambique, is aware of the situation and through our mission we are providing the necessary consular assistance to those affected and we are continuing to monitor the situation,” says Ngqengelele.

Part of providing consular support is to assist South Africans who might want to come back home to find ways to come back home," he adds.
