Disciplinary proceedings against Martizburg College pupils halted

Disciplinary proceedings against three Maritzburg College pupils who tweeted a photo of themselves holding EFF branded T-shirts have been halted with immediate effect.

The Department of Basic Education says the province's HOD for Education has sent a letter to Maritzburg College instructing them to stop the processes against the learners accused of contravening the school's code of conduct and the South African Schools Act of 1996.
The department's Elijah Mhlangu says there needs to be an investigation into the matter.
The photo, which also made a statement on the country's land issue, caused a stir on social media at the weekend.
Maritzburg College old boy and former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen entered the fray saying the image was disrespectful to the school.
The EFF said it was in full support of the pupils.
"The learners are in Grade 12 and preparing for their final exams next week. It will not be fair, in fact they'd be jeopardising their examinations by putting them through stress at this time, when they should be focusing on their exam preparation," said Mhlangu.
