Discovery: Unknown name on client's life policy 'honest mistake'

Insurance giant Discovery has apologised to a client for listing an unknown person as a life insurance beneficiary, describing it as “an honest mistake”.

In January, automotive and lifestyle content creator Matthew Kanniah took to social media to express his shock after discovering an unknown name on his life insurance policy.
Kannish was under the impression that should anything happen to him his mother would receive a lump sum payment.
Discovery spokesperson Gareth Friedlander said since 2010, the health insurer has paid over 66-thousand claims to correct individuals or estates.
“This is a unique and isolated case, where multiple beneficiary identifier fields, including date of birth, coincidentally matched, and unfortunately, the incorrect beneficiary’s name was displayed on the app. It was an honest error that was immediately rectified.
“Importantly, There was never any risk of the incorrect beneficiary being paid as the correct beneficiary was captured on the application form, and there are multiple checks in place at the claim stage to ensure the correct person is paid.
“We do advise everyone to regularly check their beneficiaries on their policy schedule or on the Discovery App and update where appropriate.”
