Disgruntled Polokwane residents threaten ‘total shutdown’

Police in Limpopo have warned of a zero-tolerance policy towards any unlawful conduct amid threats of a total shutdown in Polokwane on Thursday.

Posters have been circulating on social media warning of a shutdown in the city and other surrounding areas over service delivery issues within the Polokwane Municipality.
This is the second attempt by residents to shut down Polokwane since April amid complaints about the lack of water supply and other issues.
During a media briefing on Wednesday evening, Mayor Makoro Mpe said the municipality had yet to receive any formal communication from the protestors.
"At this stage, we can confirm that we have not received any formal communication or application for a protest from Seshego residents and or any group as is required by law," he said.
"We want to assure the community that Thursday and Friday because they are also enticing residents with Friday, will be normal business days, and we encourage everyone to proceed with their daily activities as usual."
Mpe further said the municipality remains open to engaging with residents on service delivery issues.
"We acknowledge the frustrations caused by the recent disruption in the water supply across Polokwane, including Seshego.
"The challenges we have faced with both external and municipal water services have led to temporary shortages, but we have made significant progress in restoring water services in our city. Our water sources are now operational, although reservoir levels remain critically low."
