Dlamini: Cosatu must remain united
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Trade union federation Cosatu will hold a special Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting following the cancellation of the May Day rally in Bloemfontein on Monday.
President Jacob Zuma was heckled by the crowd, while those for and against him clashed at the venue.
We caught up with Cosatu President Sdumo Dlamini on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa, in Durban.
Dlamini says despite the disruptions on Workers' Day, Cosatu must remain united.
Dlamini says the CEC meeting will reflect on what happened on 1 May.
"We were supposed to send out a clear message on what is happening about the issues as workers, but it was a missed opportunity," he says.
Dlamini declined to comment on the unions within Cosatu which refused to be addressed by President Zuma.
This follows a message of support by Dlamini for President Zuma at his birthday in Kliptown on 12 April.
"We wish that you in these hard, trying times, as a father, a husband and leader, remain strong," Dlamini said at the time.
"As you are my leader, and we tackle these issues, I need you to be strong" he added.
Cosatu has come out to officially call on President Zuma to step down.
Dlamini says it is up to the unions if they want him to remain in his position.
"I am their president. They should make a decision what they want to do about me. I am not worried about whatever decision they make. I am their president," says Dlamini.
