Dlamini-Zuma was speaking in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal after casting her special vote.

"We have to encourage young people you see. It's very important to shape the future. We say the young people are for today but also they are for the furture.”

She added it is not only their right, but also their responsibility, to cast a vote.

"It's also a sign of being a good citizen to actually take the responsibility to vote, but young people must decide whether they want this party to win or that party to win and they shouldn't just sit and say 'oh, we'll see what happens’."

Police in the province are on high alert following threats of service delivery protests ahead of elections.

"I think it should not be right for anyone to stop those who want to vote because as I say its both a right and responsibility to vote. So if that is going to happen, I hope that the services that are supposed to deal with that will be there to make sure that people who want to vote are allowed to vote and vote freely," said Dlamini-Zuma.

Dlamini-Zuma was also asked about the possibility of her becoming deputy president following the elections.

"Who becomes deputy is the president's prerogative so I've always said if I'm asked to sweep the floor I will sweep it very clean. So whatever I'm asked to do, I will do."

Dlamini-Zuma went head to head with now-president Cyril Ramaphosa at the ANC’s elective conference in Nasrec in 2017 and ended up losing by less than 200 votes.
