Dozens of Limpopo school children in hospital for alleged food poisoning

The Limpopo Education Department is investigating an alleged incident of food poisoning at the Makahlule Primary School in Ntlhaveni in Malamulele.
This comes while a memorial service will be held in Gauteng today, for the five primary school children who died of suspected food poisoning in Soweto.
In Limpopo, twenty-two learners were rushed to a nearby clinic on Wednesday afternoon when they started vomiting.
The young learners were later transferred to the Malamulele Hospital.
They were treated and discharged.
Departmental spokesperson, Mosebjane Kgaffe, says a second group of 13 learners was also rushed to the hospital complaining of headaches and stomach cramps.
"They were also released after screening by the health professionals.
"The department will take food samples that learners had on Wednesday for testing to ascertain if the school nutrition rations could have been the cause.
"The department will also check the food, mainly snacks sold by vendors outside the school premises with the assistance of health inspectors."
'We call on the parents and education community not to panic as the situation is under control and will be investigated thoroughly to ensure that learners are safe at all times,” said the MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya.
