Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the accident happened at the One Stop petrol station on the N2, about 10km from Richards Bay.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a vehicle with three people in it hurtled into the service station and slammed into the rear of a delivery truck,” said Botha.

?By the time paramedics arrived the two passengers – a man and a woman – had succumbed to their injuries.

Botha said the driver, who had “miraculously” sustained only minor injuries, was later taken into police custody.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that the 26-year old driver of the Hyundai had been arrested for drunken driving.

He faces two charges of culpable homicide as well as charges of reckless and negligent driving.

Zwane said the man was expected to appear in the Empangeni Magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
