Driving schools to operate from June

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that driving schools will resume operations on June 1.

Mbalula launched an initiative which will oversee the testing of hundreds of taxi drivers and queue marshals, not only for the coronavirus, but also for underlying medical conditions.

The initiative was launched in Ivory Park on Tuesday.

Mbalula revealed that the new regulations under level 4 lockdown will be published on Tuesday.

"As we ease the lockdown restrictions, to allow more economic restrictions, today we will be publishing further directions in terms of level 4.

"The directions that we will be issuing tody provide that all learner licenses, temporary licences, motor vehicle licences, temporary permits, roadworthy certificates and professional driving permits that expired between 26 March and 31st May will be valid.

"And their validity period is further extended by 90 days to 1st June,” Mbalula said, adding that number plates have a grace period of 6 months.

The driving schools will be subject to strict regulations.

"Movement to level 4, we've undertaken a risk assessment to the state of readiness of driving lesson testing centres, registering authorities and vehicle testing stations.

"It is on this basis we have determined that 1st June 2020 as the date for the resumption of their services to the public.

"The directions published today also allows driving schools to resume their services as of 1st June subject to hygiene, disinfections and so on."
