Drunk driver sentenced to 8 years in prison

The Pretoria Regional Court on Thursday sentenced a drunk driver to eight years in prison after he was convicted on charges of culpable homicide.
Ruan Coen and his fiancée, 25-year-old Jessika Kennedy, were driving home when Andrew Malele smashed into their vehicle in December 2017.
Malele made his first appearance in the dock last year.
Head of AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, Advocate Gerrie Nel, says the families of the victims approached them after the docket went missing.
“This is yet another example of the failure of the criminal justice system. Most concerning is that the docket had gone missing. This is simply unacceptable, but it is something the unit is seeing far too often in cases where it appears the accused person is being shielded from prosecution.
“The affected families now have some sense of closure and can focus on moving forward.”
