Duarte: ANC approaching SAHRC, IEC over DA posters

African
National Congress (ANC) deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte says the party
will approach the South African Human Rights Commission and the Independent
Electoral Commission to protest against the Democratic Alliance (DA) posters in
KwaZulu-Natal.
This comes as public outrage over the election posters in Phoenix.
“For us this poster is unacceptable, and we are formally launching a complaint with the human rights commission. This is something that needs to be interrogated by the commission. It needs to be understood, whether it is appropriate for any political party within South Africa to be promoting racism and to be promoting criminality,” said Duarte, who visited Phoenix on Thursday.
The posters in the area, which bore the brunt of some of the worst violence during the unrest in July, has the slogans ‘They called you racists, We call you heroes’ printed on them.
“We think what the DA did and the DA poster is way beyond disgusting, the ANC will also go to the IEC for them to look at whether this is not an infringement of the IEC rules and regulations,” said Duarte.
Duarte added the of use race for election campaign is wrong.
“We’d also like to make sure that out people understand that using racism as a card for elections is a very wrong thing to do and in a place like Phoenix where over 40 people lost their lives. We cannot afford to come here and re-instigate racist activities.”
