“To my good brothers at UKZN lets stop burning our buildings – we are smarter than that,” Zuma said in a video message released on social media on Monday.

He urged students who suffer from financial exclusion to empathise with the country’s leaders to deliver on their mandate of free higher education – as promised by his father.

He said: “I understand your frustrations, I understand your anger.”

The University of KwaZulu-Natal's vice-chancellor Nana Poku has said that R31 million worth of damage has been caused to the university's property by protesting students over the past few weeks.

Students have been demonstration over historical debt.

The building housing the HIV support centre, a gym, a guards and beds have been set alight in the protests.

“Let’s channel our frustrations, let hone in on our anger and let’s make a difference. We will sit down, I will come to you,” Zuma added.
