E-tolls decision ‘before Christmas’, says Mbalula

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says a decision on the future of the e-toll system could be made public before Christmas.
Mbalula made the remarks during the launch of the Gauteng festive season road safety campaign in Johannesburg on Monday.
At the end of October, Mbalula said a final decision on the e-tolls system would be announced in two weeks but was postponed due to various government commitments.
President Cyril Ramaphosa tasked Mbalula, together with the Finance Minister Tito Mboweni and Gauteng Premier David Makhura, to find a solution to the unpopular user-pay system.
Mbalula said the issue is still before cabinet and once a decision has been finalised motorists will know their fate of the system.
Mboweni hinted in his mini budget in October that, while several options are being considered to resolve the stand-off over the system, it is not likely to be scrapped.
