E-tolls fate undecided - Makhura

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has warned motorists to not jump to conclusions on the future of the e-toll system as a final decision has not been made.

Makhura was speaking at the ribbon cutting ceremony of the M2 highway on Thursday.

Makhura was joined by outgoing Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba and former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Makhura said alternatives have been put forward to tackle the system and its debt.

He pointed out that Finance Minister Tito Mboweni - in his mid-term budget speech on Wednesday - was speaking in user pay systems and not to e-tolls.

Once President Cyril Ramaphosa has made a decision everyone will be notified.

An announcement on the user-pay system was expected to be made by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Thursday. However, the press briefing on the issue was postponed to allow for further consultations to take place.

"When you hear the talk of user pay principle, I'm saying don't conflate the user pay principle with the fact that there's different to deal with e-toll debt and fund our infrastructure. User-pay applies in many sectors,” Makhura said.

"We've put forward options, very strong, very well considered options and wecare awaiting that decision."
