The preliminary statistics on the Easter season indicate that over 16 road fatalities have been recorded on Gauteng roads, of which 8 fatalities are pedestrians, says Sello Maremane, Gauteng traffic police spokesperson.

The Gauteng traffic police have called upon motorists to comply with the rules of the road as the Easter weekend comes to an end.

"Many motorists are expected to be driving back to Gauteng province following the long weekend. The province has recorded several crashes and fatalities since the beginning of the Easter Road Safety campaign last Thursday," says  Maremane.

He adds that road crashes leading to fatalities can largely be attributed to the attitude and behavior of road users.

"Drunk driving, reckless and negligent driving, speeding, unsafe overtaking, public transport overloading, and vehicle fitness are also some of the challenges that compound the situation on Gauteng roads."

“The Gauteng Traffic Police through its Road Safety Education unit will conduct activations in various corridors to encourage road users to use the road responsibly in order to prevent unnecessary road injuries and deaths resulting from road traffic crashes. The Gauteng Traffic Police will also be on high alert to deal decisively with road traffic violations,” says Maremane.
