The Kwanobuhle community in the Eastern Cape is reeling over the brutal murder of Andile ‘Lulu’ Ntuthela.
Ntuthela’s body was dug up from a shallow grave at the home of Luvuyo Jonas.
It’s understood the 40-year-old gay man fell victim to a hate crime.
His alleged assailant, 28-year-old Jonas, appeared at the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of murder.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says Jonas also faces a charge of malicious damage to property after his family reported him for burning his bedding almost two weeks ago.
“Police went to the house and found blood stains inside his room as well as outside. On 1 April until the 9 April, the suspect was hospitalised for his mental condition. On his discharge from hospital, he was arrested and detained for the malicious damage to property,” Naidu explains.
“While detectives were questioning him, information emerged relating to the murder of Andile Ntuthela. Ntuthela was gay,” she adds.
“The murder is suspected to be LGBTQI -linked.”
The matter has been postponed to June 1.
Jonas will be remanded in custody until then.
