A nurse was killed and another injured in two shooting incidents in Mount Frere, the Eastern Cape health department said on Sunday.
"There is huge panic in the hospital community as nurses do not feel safe," said spokesman Sizwe Kupelo.
While both the nurses involved were working at Madzikane Ka Zulu Memorial Hospital, the shootings took place at their private homes in separate incidents on Saturday night.
In the first incident, a nurse was shot and killed, while in the second, shots were fired but the nurse survived.
"In both incidents, it would seem to be a private matter, but nurses feel under siege because two nurses were targeted," Kupelo said.
Police were not immediately available for comment.
