A prisoner in the Wellington Prison in Mthatha was caught on Saturday hiding a gun in a box of cereal, Eastern Cape police said.
Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said police found a firearm in a box of Weet-Bix, five rounds of ammunition in a packet of sugar and Okapi knives in a chips packet in the 40-year-old prisoner's cell.
Three other prisoners were also allegedly linked to the weapons.
"The man was arrested in 2004 and sentenced in 2006...for murder," Fatyela said.
