The mother and one other person were arrested by the Hawks and police in Uitenhage on Thursday.

"The mother is alleged to be a drug addict and she connived with this other lady that, after birth, she would give her babies to her and the lady would pay her R50 per day for her to get her fix,” says the police’s Yolisa Mgobodela.

"The deal was that she would give her the R50 until the buyer registers the babies in her name and she gets the SASSA grant.”

The babies were admitted to hospital suffering from dehydration and malnutrition. They will be taken to a place of safety.

The suspects will appear in court on Monday facing charges of human trafficking.
