Minister in the Presidency for Women Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has urged both government and the private sector to give 40% of procurement to women-owned businesses.

Nkoana-Mashabane spoke at the launch of Women's Month in Pretoria on Friday.
She said access to the mainstream of the economy for women needs to be a priority.
“We have to provide women with the key to freeing themselves from shackles of depending on their perpetrators for livelihoods. We, therefore, call on all government departments and the private sector to give 40% of procurement to women-owned businesses, even when there’s no legislation.
“We all have a moral duty to have a just and equal society as enshrined in our constitution and reach 50-50 by 2030.”
Nkoana-Mashabane said her department will spend the month of August month answering questions from women on business ownership.
“The National Assembly will put major sectors under the spotlight to evaluate the level of participation of women-owned businesses. We are also beginning to look more into manufacturing, mining and mineral exploration, and women in the green economy.”
