Gauteng's MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi will visit the primary school in Pimville, where a teacher stabbed the head master several times.
According to departmental spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe, the teacher was earlier sacked by the school. He then attacked the principal with a knife.
"We are shocked at this incident and we expect the criminal justice system to prevail," Bodibe says.
He adds that the department is trying to cause as little disruptions as possible to the final exams currently underway at the school.
"The MEC will meet with the school management team today. He will also visit the principal in hospital," Bodibe said.
