The officials include the school’s principal, a teacher, two general assistants, and two HR personnel at the Johannesburg East District office.

The teacher allegedly received at least R30 000 from the two general assistants.

“It’s alleged that the implicated officials facilitated permanent appointments of the two general assistants and subsequently demanded that they deposit substantial amounts into the educator’s bank account,” says Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona.

He says the principal was implicated for failure to act when the matter was brought to his attention.

The unnamed educator appeared in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday and is currently out on bail.

The investigation was sparked by an anonymous tip-off to the department, which subsequently instituted an investigation.

Mabona says the implicated teacher then allegedly tried to bribe the department’s investigator.

“According to information at our disposal interviews were held in June 2018, however, the said GAs received backdated salary payments of over R13 000.00 respectively as according to the appointment letters they were appointed with effect from 01 April 2018 in the system,” says Mabona

The department has served all the implicated officials suspension notices on Friday.
