Education specialist set to visit Girls High
Updated | By MornéJK
Education professor and specialist, Mary Metcalfe is expected to visit the Pretoria High School for Girls today.
Metcalfe is a member of Premier David Makhura's Group of Immanent People, tasked with coming up with suggestions on how to eliminate institutionalised racism and discrimination from school rules and codes of conduct.
"I think this school is but one school where learners have indicated that issues related to racism need to be dealt with," Metcalfe told Jacaranda FM News.
She added that she has been very pleased with the response from government, so far.
Professor Metcalfe also reckons that teacher training should include more focus on interrogating the prejudices people carry.
"We all do carry those prejudices with us and it is a live long objective of people who are committed to non-racism, to keep on interrogating," she said.

This comes after learners from Girls High demanded that Gauteng's MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi meet with their head mistress to address racist practices at the school.
According to a letter that is doing the rounds, learners at the school have been forced to straighten their hair.
Lesufi has since issued various resolutions to the matter.
