Police Minister Bheki Cele says education facilities are becoming hotspots for sexual offences.

He made the remarks at the release of the latest crime statistics in Pretoria on Friday.
Sexual offences, which include rape, increased by 1.7% between April 2019 and March 2020.

"It is of concern that educational institutions are becoming hotbeds for sexual violence. Three-hundred-and-eighty cases of rape were reported at either school, universities, colleges, or day center facilities.
"This category of crime has terrorised most households and communities as most of these crimes happen behind closed doors. And the crimes are only published when the offence has been committed and often when the victims are no more," added Cele.
Attempted sexual offences decreased by 3.3% and contact sexual offences by 6.0%.
