Eersterust residents told ’there is not enough space to build houses’

Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga says while the city is serious about keep its commitments to the residents of Eersterust there is not enough space to build more houses in the area.

“The only way we will be able to give people of Eersterust houses, is by moving them to another area. There is not enough space in Eersterust to build,”  Msimanga said at a media briefing on Thursday.


He said that officials visited the community twice in the last month to address the social ills and to engage the community on government’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

Residents have embarked on a protest action over the past two days demanding better service delivery.


All entrances and exists to Eersterust were barricaded with burning tyres and objects on Wednesday.


A building was also torched on Wednesday evening.


“Last night, one of the council’s buildings was burnt by residents of Eersterust. Currently we as TMPD and SAPS we are monitoring the fight until everything is back to normal. At this stage there are no people that were arrested but there a quite a number of people that were injured due to their unruly behaviour,” says Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson, Isaac Mahamba.


The community has vowed to continue with their protests if officials do not act on their demands immediately.
