EFF confirms Gupta spy reports

The Economic Freedom Fighters says it can confirm reports that the controversial Gupta family has been spying on party leader Julius Malema.

"We know that a private foreign family, the Guptas, has had access to the travel itinerary and ID number of a party leader and member of the South African Parliament," the party says in a statement.

It follows the latest #GuptaLeaks report by News24 of emails that the family allegedly had sensitive information about prominent South Africans.

"Emails and documents obtained through the #GuptaLeaks showed how the family spied on prominent South Africans, including former finance minister Trevor Manuel; his wife and Absa CEO Maria Ramos; EFF leader Julius Malema and FirstRand bosses Laurie Dippenaar and GT Ferreira," reports News24.

It adds, the family was in possession of the individuals' travel information as well as their ID numbers.

The EFF has now vowed in a statement to take action as it is "not only criminal, but undermining to the generosity of this country that has welcomed them as foreigners".

The party intends to take the matter up with the Inspector General of Intelligence and further warns to defend itself should authorities "not act with decisiveness".

The #GuptaLeaks, a trove of around 200 000 e-mails, has exposed the Guptas' alleged influence on government and senior officials at state-owned entities.
