EFF to 'consult' over Mashaba resignation
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) say it will enter into internal consultations on the way forward following the resignation of Herman Mashaba as Johannesburg mayor.
Prior to his resignation on Monday morning, Mashaba has been vocal about the return of newly elected federal council chairperson Helen Zille to the party, stating that he would resign if “right wing elements” started influencing the party.
He also lashed out at the Democratic Alliance's (DA) leadership style, stating that from the first day he took over as mayor, the city’s coalition government had been "undermined, criticised and rendered nearly impossible".
EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says the party will soon pronounce on the proposed way forward.
"We shall make these pronouncements in accordance with the deadline of the 27 November 2019," he said.
It's still not known who will succeed Mashaba as the new Mayor of Johannesburg next month.
However the African National Congress (ANC) has made it clear that it would be contesting the mayoral position at next month's council sitting.
