EFF denies vandalising Queen Victoria statue

The Queen Victoria Statue, which has stood in front of the Main Library on Govan Mbeki Avenue since 1903  was found covered in green paint on Friday morning.

Ward councillor, Morne Steyn has condemned the incident.

'Cheap political points'

We find these acts absolutely disgraceful. 

This is yet another local tourism attraction that has been vandalised for cheap political points, he said.

Steyn said the incident had happened very recently, as the green paint was still wet to touch.

We can understand that there is unhappiness over these statues, but we are urging those responsible to stop the vandalism and follow due legal recourse, he said.

The law cant be taken into your own hands, he said.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Johann Rheeder said no case had been opened, but police had been dispatched to the statue to investigate.
