This comes amid a long-standing feud between the minister and the EFF.
In 2018, Malema claimed that allegations that his party members received R1 million in the VBS Mutual Bank scandal are being perpetuated by Gordhan.

“There are many views, it is a democracy, they’ve got their view and our view is that we must disrupt it and make sure we hold government accountable”
“We are going to hold this executive accountable and our way of holding it accountable is by disrupting; disruption is part of our language.”
