EFF Ekurhuleni slams officials for R200m non-payment of services, missing trucks
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The EFF's Gauteng provincial chairperson and Ekurhuleni finance MMC, Nkululeko Dunga has criticised officials in the city for over R200m in unpaid invoices for suppliers.
Dunga and other EFF MMCs deployed in the city briefed the media on Wednesday following an assessment of the state of the city.
The five mayoral committee members were appointed in April after the African Independent Congress (AIC) councillor, Sivuyile Ngodwana was elected as the new mayor.
Dunga says the new MMCs identified pressing issues within the city that require urgent attention.
"We have noted with concern the issue of non-payment of service providers on time. Currently, the city has just over R200 million in unpaid invoices. This has serious implications for the ability of the city to deliver services.
“The economic impact of such payment delays goes beyond the supplier’s ability to render services but has a direct impact on the entire value chain, which includes employees of these service providers and manufacturers that provide raw materials to all suppliers," says Dunga.
Dunga says the party officials also learned about missing assets in the city.
"We have learnt to know that the city has an assets register of 103 waste compactors. However, we can only confirm 32 from the Department with reluctance to do a physical audit of these trucks, we are even more concerned about the remaining waste compactors as they cannot be located."
Dunga warned that the party will open a case against the current Acting HOD of the Department of Waste Management and Environmental Services Phakamile Mbengashe if the trucks are not accounted for by the end of the week.
City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says the city is still studying the statement on all the issues that were raised by the EFF.
