EFF motion to rename Cape Town airport after Mama Winnie shot down
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) motion to rename the Cape Town International Airport to struggle icon Winnie Madikizela Mandela has been shot down.
EFF leader Julius Malema tabled the motion in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
“There is no currency under the sun that could ever repay her contribution to our freedom,” Malema told MPs.
ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu argued that Parliament is not constitutionally empowered to change the name of landmarks in the country.
Mthembu, in turn, moved to amend the motion – affirming the party supports the process undertaken by the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) to rename four South African airports.
An outraged Malema said that “it’s clear they are scared of her, even in her death”.
