EFF to march in Phoenix on Thursday

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in eThekwini says Thursday’s protest march in Phoenix, north of Durban is meant to remind the police of their constitutional duties.

The party has confirmed it will march on Thursday to protest against the killings that took place in the area last month.
Some 36 people died in the area during the unrest, which some describing the events as a racially-motivated massacre.
EFF eThekwini regional spokesperson Mazwi Blose has vowed that the march will be peaceful.
“A lot of black people were butchered, killed, thrown in rivers and just chopped like animals, so we are then going to Phoenix to remind the police of their constitutional duties. To say that they need to confiscate all those illegal firearms that were used to kill our people. We see the SANDF and police going to shacks, taking food, while there are criminals in Phoenix.
“So we are going there, peacefully as a region of eThekwini under strict Covid-19 protocols to handover our memorandum. We also want the security company suspended because most of those companies are owned by Indians.”
Blose says the EFF believes the police’s stats are inaccurate.
“That number of 36 is not true. It is very much distant from reality because we have been speaking to the police and families who have been affected.
“Those 36 people are people who have been identified, there are still many people who have not been found, there are families who still can’t find their children and also lets not only count people who died, what about those who were injured.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has since written a letter to the South African Human Rights Commission to stop the planned march.
The party fears that the march will further inflame racial tensions in the area.
