The ANC’s Xhakaza was elected unopposed following the ousting of Sivuyile Ngodwana during a vote of no confidence.

He said the appointment of the multi-party mayoral committee “is the beginning of a new era of responsive service delivery and strategic governance”.

"The incoming mayoral committee members are committed to ethical leadership, transparency, efficiency, innovation and the betterment of the residents of Ekurhuleni. The members have been selected on the basis of their experience, expertise and commitment to serve the residents of Ekurhuleni," he said.

Here is the new mayoral committee:

1. MMC for Water and Sanitation: Cllr Thembi Msane

2. MMC for Environmental Resources and Waste Management: Cllr Leshaka Manamela

3. MMC for Community Services: Cllr Bridget Thusi

4. MMC for Finance: Cllr Nkululeko Dunga

5. MMC for Community Safety: Ald. Sizakele Masuku

6. MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate: Ald. Nomadlozi Nkosi

7. MMC for Roads and Transport Planning: Cllr Andile Mngwevu

8. MMC for Energy: Cllr Mzayifani Ngwenya

9. MMC for Human Settlements: Cllr Kgopelo Hollo

The former mayor, Ngodwana, has returned as MMC for Corporate and Shared Services.

Meanwhile, ActionSA has questioned the reappointment of EFF councillor Nkululeko Dunga as Finance MMC.

Last month, credit ratings agency Moody's placed the metro on review for further downgrades.

Dunga has been accused of missing the deadline to submit the city’s 2022/23 annual financial statements, which him in breach of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

ActionSA's Siyanda Makhubo says it is evident that a vote for the EFF is a vote for the ANC, even at the cost of service delivery for residents.

"The committee clearly represents a compromise between the ANC and EFF, where the EFF has managed to return with five MMC positions despite their dismal performance in government under the puppet mayor, Ngodwana.

"Of significance is the appoint of Councillor Dunga of the EFF as MMC for Finance, who for more than a year has plunged the city’s financial health to crisis levels, rendering the city to be unable to pay service providers, collapsing service delivery in the process."

The EFF's Dumisani Baleni said the party was not in a position to comment.
