North West Police have launched a manhunt for six awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Mogwase Magistrates' Court holding cells on Tuesday.
Eight prisoners were being escorted back to the holding cells from the courtroom when they managed to overpower a court orderly.
Police spokesperson Amanda Funani says the escapees were arrested for murder, robbery and possession of firearm, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property.
"The member had just unlocked the cells door for the awaiting trial detainee when those who were inside suddenly pushed the burglar door, overpowered the member and ran away to different directions.
"The escapees are Tebogo Mosito (29) Letlatsa Mpota (31), Katlego Mafatlhe (35), Keitumetse Lekolomi (25), Thabang Matlho (25) and Katlego Mkitle (26)."
Police managed to rearrest two escapees Lebogang Mokotleng and Tshepang Raselemane at the Mogwase taxi rank on the same day.
"Lebogang Mokotleng (27) was arrested for robbery, attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition while Tshepang Raselemane (25) is charged for robbery, possession of firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property." she added
Funani has called on the public to not try and re-arrest the escapees as they are considered dangerous.
