Ekurhuleni 'exploring legal options' against company, driver in Boksburg explosion
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Ekurhuleni mayor Tania Campbell says the city is exploring its legal options with a view to taking action against the trucking company and the driver involved in the Boksburg gas explosion.
An LPG tanker exploded near the OR Tambo memorial hospital on Christmas Eve, killing 38 people including emergency personnel and children.
On Monday Campbell met with her MMCs, the police chief and senior officials in the departments to get feedback on the status of the investigation.
Campbell says there has been progress in the investigation.
"Since the day of the explosion, various departments in the city have been working tirelessly to ensure that a thorough and meaningful investigation takes place to ascertain what happened on the day and the way forward.
"We are of the opinion that there is sufficient evidence to do so. Once all investigations are concluded, we will show no fear nor favour in holding those responsible to account."
The final report is expected to be presented before the mayoral committee in January, after which it will be presented to council.
The driver of the truck was earlier released from custody due to lack of evidence.
