Ekurhuleni metro protects cemeteries
Updated | By ANA
The Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality has introduced measures to punish those responsible for vandalising cemeteries.
A fine of R2 000 or a six months jail sentence will be part of the penalities introducted.
“Hundreds of graves have been damaged throughout the metro, with some headstones being pushed over and sentimental ornaments and valuables stolen for illegal trade in the informal market,” said spokesman Themba Gadebe.
“This behaviour by unscrupulous individuals leaves grieving families with immeasurable emotional and financial stress. Perpetrators of these crimes will be subject to pay either a fine of up to R2000 or to serve six months in jail.”
Gadebe said affected families could also claim for repair expenses from identified vandals.
He urged residents to keep an eye on cemeteries and report illegal activities to the authorities.
