Protesting residents closed the Golden Highway on Monday and blocked traffic on the N12 near Lenasia and Freedom Park.

Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) officers fired rubber bullets to try and disperse the crowd.

One of the protesters says they will protest until Mashatile takes their grievances seriously.

“They have disregarded and disrespected us. As the first nation of this country we are Khoi San and this is our country. We have been marginalised since 1994. All the infrastructure you see around Eldorado Park was built by the apartheid government. Not one RDP house was built in Eldorado Park. We are not being noticed and the time is now for us to be noticed. This protest will continue until the MEC comes to Eldos and addresses us.”

Another resident, who is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), said the ANC government needs to release funds to the DA can develop Eldorado Park.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety confirmed that MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane is on her way to meet with residents at the local police station.
