North West Police Spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says the suspects are still in police holdings.

"These people are facing [charges] of contravention of the electoral act 1998," says Mokgwabone.

He adds the suspects will appear in court soon.

This is the same area, where residents have also shut down three schools, earmarked as voting stations.

The community is reportedly protesting against poor service delivery.

The violence erupted on the first day of country wide special voting and less than 48 hours till the polls open for the national election.

In a separate incident in the province, protesters in Ikageng township in Potchefstroom torched an empty IEC ballot box.

"In this incident, we have also opened a case, but we haven't been able to arrest anybody."

Police investigations are continuing.

National police have identified the North West as a hotspot in the run up to tomorrow's poll.
