Elections impact start of the matric final exams
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Department of Basic Education said plans are in place to ensure that Grade 12 final examinations do not clash with the election day.
The class of 2021 will start with the National Senior Certificate exams on the 1st of November - the same day millions of South Africans will head to the local government polls.
Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said there would be changes to the examination timetable.
"Last week on Friday we held a series of meeting with stakeholders to discuss few scenarios that the department was considering but needed to obtain their input for a way forward."
He said they also want eligible pupils to go and vote on election day.
"Whatever business that we wanted to conduct on that day will not take place because its election day, we are going to rearrange our plans whether it is a public holiday or not because we also want some of our learners to go out and vote."
Mhlanga said a final announcement will be made by the end of the week.
