Eleven men have been arrested for stealing jewellery worth R80,000 in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.
Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the men were arrested in Amanzimtoti on Monday.
They approached Umkomaas residents and offered to exchange cooking pots and duvets for broken jewellery, which they then took to their car to weigh, but instead drove away with it, said Mdunge.
"It is believed that criminals, especially youth, [are] looking for money to feed their drug habit, break into homes and steal jewellery as there is a market for it," said Mdunge.
The men were expected to appear soon in court.
