Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the eleven suspects arrested on Sunday and are aged between 33 and 54.

"Police followed two suspicious vehicles, an Audi and Toyota Etios to a house in Birch Acres, Kempton Park. As the police were approaching, the suspects started shooting at the police who returned fire," says Masondo.

He adds police recovered unlicensed firearms, ammunition and eight vehicles suspected to be stolen.

Masondo says one suspect was killed during the shootout and it is believed that the gang was planning a robbery.

The suspects will appear at Kempton Park Magistrate's court in due course.

Police also stopped a foiled robbery in the area after receiving information about a hijacked vehicle with men that are heavily armed, says Masondo.

He adds the police followed the information and the vehicle was spotted.

"When realising that they were being followed and monitored, the suspects accelerated, and a chase ensued. Suspects stopped the vehicle, a grey Mercedes Benz, and fled on foot."

Masondo says the preliminary investigation reveals that the car was hijacked in Bramley, last month.

The vehicle was searched, and four firearms were recovered, says Masondo.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court soon.
