The emotional SARS apology
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
South African Revenue Services (SARS) offered an emotional apology to South Africa, it's government and tax payers for "falling short of the high standards of performance", SARS officials have always set for themselves.
These were the words of Acting SARS Commissioner, Mark Kingon, during his testimony at the Nugent Commission on Friday.
Kingon was temporarily appointed, while Commissioner Tom Moyane is on suspension.
The SARS inquiry is probing tax administration and governance issues at the embattled tax state entity.
An emotional Kingon - who had to take a breath to stop himself from crying - also apologised to the president, minister and deputy minister of finance and former and current staff members of SARS.
"For not living up to the SARS values and higher purpose," adds Kingon.
Kingon "unreservedly" apologised also for the poor communication, unfair treatment and fear and pain in which staff members may have been subjected.
