Enoch Mgijima art gallery burns down

The Enoch Mgijima Municipality has dismissed reports that its municipal offices burned down Tuesday.

The Eastern Cape municipality has been in the news for its controversial Lesseyton Sports facility which cost R15 million.
Many, including the Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, remain unconvinced that the sports facility is worth R15 million due to its basic features.
The committee has called for an investigation into the facility.
On Tuesday, an art gallery building belonging to the municipality went up in flames.
"The cause of the fire is not yet known and our fire department will today conduct an investigation. The building was currently unoccupied, while the Municipality was in negotiations with potential occupants in both public and the private sector," said spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa
Kowa assured that there were no files or assets kept in the building.
"There were no files or any assets kept in the building as it was never used for Municipal administration since the amalgamation of Tsolwana, Inkwanca, and Lukhanji Municipalities to form Enoch Mgijima Municipality in 2016," he added.
