Equal Education: ‘No plans’ by Education Dept to ensure all pupils placed

Equal Education has called on the Department of Education in Gauteng and Western Cape to ensure the immediate admission of all unplaced pupils in the two provinces.

Members of the civil society movement picketed outside the department's district offices in Benoni and Cape Town on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, officials in Gauteng said over 20,000 pupils had not been placed.

However, on Wednesday, the department's spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said all pupils had since been placed.

Equal Education organiser Sive Fani says the department is blaming late applications by parents.

'Since the beginning of the 2024 school year, EE parent members have visited several schools and districts in both provinces to observe school readiness for 2024 and to monitor the progress of learner admission to schools.

"At each of these visits, parents seeking placement for their children have approached EE with grievances about the admissions process, expressing frustration with the inefficient and unclear application and appeals processes.

"It has increasingly become clear that education departments do not have plans to ensure all prospective learners are rapidly allocated schools."
