The power utility says there was a bomb threat at one of their power station in Mkondeni, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says the offices had to be evacuated.

"Police are combing the area to make sure it is real or not,"  says Phasiwe.

Phasiwe adds a number of employees at some of their power stations in Ekurhuleni were also forced to go home due to intimidation, allegedly by disgruntled colleagues.

Wage negotiation between the power utility and three unions, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and Solidarity have reached a deadlock.

Workers are also demanding to be paid a bonus, something the cash-strapped power utility said it simply cannot afford.

There are similar work stoppages in Emalahleni but Phasiwe says the power system has remained stable.

"But we repeat our message to say that this later this afternoon, there is a big risk of load shedding because we do not have enough people to onsite at our power stations which could compromise our ability to generate electricity."
