Eskom extends load shedding into the weekend

South Africans will have to deal with rolling blackouts for the rest of the week after Eskom announced the extension of stage 2 load shedding until Saturday.

The power utility briefed the media on Tuesday on the state of the national power grid.
Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer says the utility was forced to introduce power cuts due to failures at multiple generating units.
On Monday, a unit each at the Matla, Kendal, Matimba, Kusile and Grootvlei power stations tripped.
This while a unit each at Arnot and Hendrina power stations were forced shut down on Monday morning, while unit 3 at Medupi tripped later in the day.
Oberholzer said more units are expected to return to service over the weekend.
“The outlook for the week is that an additional four units are expected to return to service by the weekend, but we all know due to the unreliability and unpredictability of the generators and to prevent the need for any higher stage of load shedding. We, unfortunately, have to inform the public that we will continue with stage 2 load shedding up until 5am on Saturday.”
