Eskom ‘fuel thieves’ in the dock
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Two people appeared in the Kriel Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Thursday on charges of theft and fraud.
The pair are accused of selling fuel to a third party and then submitting a fraudulent invoice to Eskom claiming to have delivered the fuel at Matla Power Station.
On Wednesday, Eskom employee Sphiwe Sindane (36) and truck driver Loveless Mabaso (41) were arrested following an investigation by the police’s priority committee on energy security.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the theft caused a loss of some R1 million to Eskom.
“It’s alleged that the pair sold and delivered the fuel oil to someone known to them and later submitted a fraudulent invoice to Eskom claiming to have delivered the fuel.
“According to Eskom, heavy fuel oil is instrumental in electricity production.”
