Eskom hands back load shedding powers to Ekurhuleni
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Eskom has handed back load shedding operations to the City of Ekurhuleni.
The utility earlier stripped the municipality of its ability to dim the lights after it failed to implement load reduction as required.
On Wednesday, Eskom accused the municipality of failing to comply with the load shedding schedule, adding further pressure on an already strained grid.
Previously, the city was only permitted to load shed substations that feed critical loads, and upon request, Eskom handed over the implementation to the municipality.
But on Friday, Eskom said the city has given it an assurance that it has put controls in place to ensure it is able to implement load shedding.
"Eskom will take over the loadshedding of any municipality that fails to comply for whatever reason, even after it has been engaged on the matter as was the case with Ekurhuleni," said Eskom Gauteng spokesperson Amanda Qithi
"The power utility is obliged to take the necessary precautions to protect the integrity and stability of the grid."
Qithi warned Eskom will continue to monitor Ekurhuleni and other municipalities to ensure the implementation of planned power cuts.
